| We are all linked to our past and fortunately the past is very much in evidence and available to explore in Denmark. We have a total of around 28,000 ancient monuments, many of which you will see on a trip into the countryside: Grave mounds, long barrows, runic stones, passage graves, pilgrim routes, ruined castles, strongholds and monasteries and more besides. The ancient monuments are often located in some of the most scenic settings: since ancient times, the Danes have settled on the coasts, by lakes and river valleys, to live off the sea and the soil, and have buried their dead on hilltops where the final resting places could be seen for miles around. |
